Oxford is famously know for being the oldest University city in the UK . Every year visitors come to admire the beautiful gothic architecture and the traditional atmosphere which is all pervasive. Visitors are able to spend days exploring the beautiful streets and buildings in this busy city. Located just fifty miles to the West of London, it is easy to travel further afield and explore other iconic areas.
Visitor Attractions
A core part of this University city, the Bodleian Library which opened in 1602, is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and is the largest library in the UK. This is an imposing building with magnificent architecture, and is an iconic part of this intellectual city. Generations of famous scholars have studied here over the years making this a quintessentially English place, filled with an imposing sense of greatness. In close proximity is The Divinity School and the Radcliffe Camera which is another part of the library and again one of Oxford’s most famous buildings.
38 Oxford Colleges
There are 38 colleges which make up the University and they are spread out across the city. All of the colleges have visiting hours, allowing guests to come and see these magnificent buildings and their well-kept gardens. Visiting these buildings makes for an interesting day-out and allows visitors to get to know this city and what it has become famous for.
These magnificent gardens are set in the centre of Oxford and have won many accolades over the years. The Garden is made-up of three sections which features tradition British Garden features, and new and interesting Black Boarder and Autumn Boarders. This is a great visit for all budding horticulturists, as well as those who just would like a leisurely day out.
Shopping
Oxford is perfect for a shopping day-out. The Westgate Shopping Centre contains many chain high-street stores. The covered market area offers visitors a tradition English market experience, with Green Grocers, Butchers and independent shops. There are also several independent cafés in this area.
Eating-out
Eating-out in Oxford is a wonderful experience, restaurants and laid-back cafés provide guests with a variety of dining options. The Randolph Hotel is famously known for its luxury afternoon teas. Gee’s Restaurant on Banbury Road offers some brilliant English food, and places emphasis on their array of tasty seasonal vegetables. Chain restaurants such as the famous Jamie’s Italian, and American restaurant Maxwell’s are also located in the city centre.
