The UK’s second city; Birmingham has more canals than Venice, more trees than Paris, and more parks than any other city in Europe (apparently). It was the world’s first ever manufacturing town and a major part of the industrial revolution.
Birmingham is a modern city but those industrial roots still resonate in the architecture and expansive canal network, you can learn about Birmingham’s past at many different locations throughout the city.
In a city with over 1 million people there are plenty of things to see and do, if you’re visiting sometime soon then why not try and make your way through some of our recommendations during your stay?
Attractions
Cadbury World is one of the region’s most popular attractions and definitely one not to miss if you’re a chocolate lover! Enjoy lots of free chocolate as you explore the history of chocolate making and the story of this iconic company. A good day out for adults and children alike.
One of Birmingham’s biggest assets is its vast network of waterways, providing a fantastic way to explore the city’s green areas. Hire out a boat or take a day cruise from Sherborne Wharf to enjoy Britains second city by water.
Think Tank- Museum of Science and Discovery
Another great option for families, this award winning science museum has 4 floors of interactive displays and engaging demonstrations to keep you entertained for hours. It also has an Imax cinema and planetarium, enjoy a day of fun and learning by booking a visit when you stay in Birmingham.
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
BMAG has a large collection of art and artefacts on display, helping to document the history of the midlands. Enjoy a diverse range of art from the Pre-Raphaelite era or fascinations from Birmingham’s Industrial age under the same roof.
Shopping
The Bull Ring is Birmingham’s premier shopping centre and its iconic design has illustrated the city’s contemporary image. With over 160 store situated on 4 floors, the Bull Ring is definitely the city’s first stop for some retail therapy.
Half of all jewellery produced in the UK comes from Birmingham, and the vast majority of this is made and sold in The Jewellery Quarter. Enjoy exploring this part of Birmingham and have dinner in one of the 30 restaurants in the district.
This is Birmingham’s main thoroughfare and street for shopping. With a wide range of shops and services it still remains a popular place for retail.
Eating Out
The Chameleon is only a year old but has already gained a fantastic reputation for its food. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers modern and traditional British dishes, as well as a selection of international options.
A multi-award winning Indian restaurant, Itihaas offers a stylish dining experience with an Indian menu that draws inspiration from many other places. In a city that has many Indian restaurants the Itihaas stands out from the competition.
A mile out from the city centre you can find this one Michelin Star restaurant inside a grade 2 listed country house. The menu that takes most of its inspiration from French cuisine is the main reason for Simpsons’ popularity and the main reason it is considered one of the best restaurants in the midlands.
Regarded as the best Italian restaurants outside of London, San Carlo- Birmingham offers a menu of over 140 dishes and often plays host to high profile guests. With produce direct from Italy it provides one of the most authentic Italian tastes.
Nightlife
With live music and a wide range of cocktails Island Bar is considered one of the best bars in the city. Voted in the top 50 bars in Britain by The Independent, Island Bar is the perfect place to go for an informal night out, you can even take cocktail lessons!
A great place to catch a gig whilst you’re in town, why not head over to the 02 Academy box office and see what it on during your visit?
Birmingham has several theatres, but the Hippodrome caters for theatre, comedy, music, opera and ballet. It’s packed schedule is always worth checking before your stay if you are a fan of the stage.
Eat, drink and dance at The Jam House, enjoy the great menu and talented acts performing for you every night in this relaxing venue. An over 21 age requirement is enforced and a smart-casual dress code is also in place.
