Mayor Drives Tank over Illegally Parked Cars

If Boris Johnson is a keen cyclist then what would you class Arturas Zuokas as? The 43-year-old mayor of Vilnius in Lithuania has declared war on illegal parking in the country’s capital in spectacular fashion, by crushing an unwitting (yet illegally parked) Mercedes with an armoured car.

 The decision to take to the streets in the military vehicle was a response to the high level of expensive car drivers within the city who would park illegally regardless of the fine incurred. In the mayor’s own words:

 "I wanted to send a clear message that people with big and expensive cars can’t park wherever they feel like and ignore the rights of pedestrians and bike riders.

"It shows a lack of respect and won’t be tolerated. Of course, you have to have a sense of humour in my line of work and I thought this would be a way of drawing attention to the fact that the city intends to be proactive in its fight against illegal parking."
